The #1 question teens hear on TikTok. Here’s the answer that actually sticks.
The atheist claim:
“If God is all-powerful AND all-good, then kids shouldn’t get cancer and tsunamis shouldn’t kill thousands. Either He can’t stop it (not all-powerful) or He doesn’t want to (not all-good). Christianity is logically impossible.”
1. The Free-Will Defense (Most Common reply)
Evil is not a “thing” God created — it’s the absence or twisting of good (like darkness = absence of light).
Real love requires real freedom. Robots can’t love.
God gave humans the ability to choose Him… or to choose to do evil. Most of the worst suffering is human-caused.
Natural disasters? The same laws of physics that let rain grow crops can lead to floods and droughts. God created the laws of this universe and much like a clock maker, set them to work.
2. The Soul-Making Answer (Changing hearts and lives)
A world with zero pain, zero struggle, zero tears produces shallow, selfish, spoiled people.
Suffering is the furnace that forges:
Courage • Compassion • Sacrifice • Humility • Dependence on God
Real-life examples every person gets:
The parent who sits up all night with a hurting child grows in compassion they never would have otherwise.
The cancer survivor who says, “I wouldn’t wish it on anyone… but is now a deeper, kinder person.”
The friend who lost a dear one and now notices the lonely people around them.
“Pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” — C.S. Lewis
Even Jesus “learned obedience through what He suffered” (Hebrews 5:8). If the perfect Son of God grew through suffering, how much more do we?
3. The Eternity Answer (The KO to this objection)
Ask the atheist this:
“If there is no God and no afterlife, then suffering is ultimately meaningless and you have zero grounds to even call it ‘evil.’ It’s just molecules bumping in the dark. Why are you so mad at randomness?”
But if Christianity is true:
Every tear will be wiped away (Revelation 21:4)
Every wrong will be made right
Every child who died too soon will run into Jesus’ arms
From the vantage point of a trillion years in glory, our worst 80 years on earth won’t even register.
So the real question flips:
How loving would God be if He let those who choose to do evil get away with it forever and never healed a single tear?
Key verses to memorize & fire back
Romans 8:28
2 Corinthians 4:17
1 Peter 1:6-7
Bottom line:
“Suffering doesn’t disprove God. It only makes sense if love is real, character matters, and Heaven is coming.”
