“You Christians say Father + Son + Holy Spirit = one God? 1 + 1 + 1 = 3 gods! That’s math, not monotheism. You’re polytheists.”
1. It’s one “WHAT” and three “WHOs” (the apple illustration everyone gets)
An apple has three parts that are all 100% apple, yet they’re distinct:
Skin – fully apple
Flesh – fully apple
Core – fully apple
They’re not ⅓ apple each. Each part is completely apple, yet there aren’t three apples — just one apple.
God is one Being (one “WHAT” = divine nature) in three Persons (three “WHOs” = Father, Son, Holy Spirit).
All three are fully God, yet there is only one God.
2. Three drops of water become ONE drop (same essence, different persons)
Take three separate drops of water and touch them together — they instantly become one single drop. Same substance (H₂O), yet moments before they were three distinct drops.
Father, Son, and Spirit are three distinct Persons who share the exact same divine essence. They never “merge” into one Person, but they are never separate Gods either — perfectly one in nature.
3. The knockout: The Essence–Energy Distinction (Eastern Orthodox clarity)
God’s ESSENCE (what He is) is utterly one, simple, unknowable.
God’s ENERGIES (how He acts and relates) are uncreated and can be three Persons without dividing the essence.
St. Gregory Palamas (14th century) showed this isn’t some new idea — it’s how the early church always understood it.
Islam and Western logic often collapse “essence” and “energy” together, but Scripture and the fathers don’t.
We worship one God in three Persons, not three gods or one Person wearing masks.
